I am still here!

Crazy working on packing the house, getting ready to be a matron of honor for my best friend, giving a shower, new job teaching little ones... and Sweet Bella accidentally broke my camera, so will post again when things work themselves out.

She's got it!

I couldn't be more thrilled. It seems we have sat down a million times. Bug , Bella and I practicing, striving to learn, going through the motions. It would go in one ear and out the other. There goes my mom's voice again. Bug, when he was little would say " Mama teach me to knit. " "I'd love to. " I would say. And we would get out his knitting supplies and sit down comfortably together and start the Rhyme...

" IN the woods goes the hunter, ROUND the tree goes the dog, OUT pops the rabbit, and OFF they run."

Bug would them begin frantically stabbing at the ball of yarn, saying he was knitting a sweater for Papa Bear. When Bella was old enough same thing, though it was because she was mimicking Bug, at least I don't think I look like that when I knit. Hmmm. I began to wonder if along with my ambidexterity (which causes some left/right confusion on my part)they also got that stubborn streak I had also inherited. Finally we put it away and tried not to give up. Maybe Bean would be my knitter, Bella and Bug liked to sew and embroider after all.
For Christmas Santa delivered into our stockings Knitting towers from my favorite shop Nova Naturals. And my love, my sweet girl picked it up and she "GOT IT "! Finger knitting also. I believe we are on our way to getting those #10 straights back out of the closet.

Finally

Finally things have melted, our unseasonal weather has ended. We are back to normal, whatever that may be. Looking at the pictures above I feel so grateful that all my children are able to sit and quietly pursue some activity of choice, finally. I think it is a rare gift to enjoy companionship and solidarity all at once. To just be and be "OK" with that. Finally we are getting there.

I remember six

Walking down the dark street following shoes much bigger than mine, it was busy and noisy. The restaurants and stores were crowed and smokey. As we were walking doors would open and I would catch a glimpse inside. I remember wondering what those things were the lady had on her breast that look like airplane propellers, not why she was naked and dancing in front of all those people. I asked, no one answered. It was New Orleans, the French Quarter, and I was six. It was a big trip for me, the time my uncle, then 18, ceased being my hero, I found out adults don't always tell the truth, and discovered my love of food and creating it. I remember being six. Do you?

I remember certain obscure times in my childhood. Things parents may not realize children remember. My parents often ask if I remember going here or there. I am sorry, I don't, not everything at least. I remember my first time seeing a stripper wearing pasties. Who wouldn't? I remember my uncle saying something unkind about my father and then saying something extremely unkind to me. I remember my first trip to New Orleans. I remember Cafe du Monde and Beignets.

I think often about what my kids will remember from their childhood. I hope they will remember all the things I do with and for them, but in reality I know they probably won't. I will have to do that for them, with pictures , and stories retold over and over again, with this blog. With a little hope they will remember more of the good times and less of the bad.

Snow day

Slipping, Sliding, Sledding, Sloshing. Do you remember Snow Days? Snow Balls, Snow Angels, Snow Forts, Snow Wars. Sticking out your tongue to catch and taste your very first Snowflake. No two are alike, you know? Riding on Trash can lids, card board boxes, or anything else an imaginative mind can find. How fast can you go? I'll go faster, I know! The day seemed so short as wet toes begin to sting, but always inside a loving hug and homemade Hot Cocoa to warm you through. Do you remember your first Snow Day? I do...
